Maryland Alcohol Server Training Requirements (2026)
Maryland does not require most alcohol servers to be trained, but the state recognizes training and may reward it. Statewide: each retail license holder (or a designated employee) must complete an approved alcohol awareness program. Servers generally not required statewide. New hires: No deadline set in § 4-505; local licensing boards set presence rules. Validity: 4 years; retrain every 4 years.
⚠ Sources disagree
- TIPS/Responsibility.org list Maryland as 'voluntary', but Md. Alc. Bev. & Cann. § 4-505 mandates licensee-level training.

Which course should I take?
- Not required statewide? Check your city/county first (see local mandates), then your employer and insurer. A nationally recognized course such as TIPS or ServSafe Alcohol is the most portable choice if you may move states.
- Your certificate lasts about 4 year(s) here. Set a free renewal reminder →
